Welcome to a new year of quilting! I have accepted the position of chairman for the 2006 Community Education and Publicity committee. During the year I will strive to promote the art and history of quilting by exposing our works in new venues: hospitals, schools, community buildings, libraries, churches, and any other opportunity that presents itself. In the past we have participated in Heritage Hills Park events, Quilt Daze, the Victorian Tea Society, and the Orange County Fair. I hope these events will present themselves again this year and that all of you remember to volunteer. We need the help of every guild member to promote our craft and make the event educational and memorable to the community.
New ideas, new venues, and suggestions for improvement are welcome from all members. Let’s work together to showcase our talents and accomplishments while educating the community in the history and craft of quilting!

Community Education Chairman, 2006

Upcoming Educational Events
Orange County Fair, 2006
The Orange County Fair will be open July 7-30, 2006. We are assigned Friday, July 14, to staff a booth in the Home & Hobbies Building. I will be looking for volunteers to fill 4-hour work shifts where you will greet the public, publicize our guild, and demonstrate our craft. In conjunction with the Philanthropy Committee, we will be working on small projects such as placemats, cancer pillows, and small baby quilts. Hand quilting or appliqué would also be welcome as a demonstration. The Jewel Box friendship group has the honor of presenting a trunk show during the day. Parking and admission to the Orange County Fairgrounds and Exposition Center are provided, and presents a good way to view other exhibits and enjoy the fair.
Fall Quilting Retreat 2006
Mark your calendars for September 22 through September 24, 2006, and join us at Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center in Temecula for a relaxing weekend of quilting to your heart’s delight. The sleeping and sewing rooms are air conditioned and well lit. The food is plentiful and very good. There is a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, and you may sign-up for a massage. Their website is www.vinalestonnac.com. Those who attended a previous retreat are excited to return.
Spaces are filling up fast. The cost for the retreat is $195 for double occupancy and $260 for single occupancy for the three days. . To reserve your place, make a $100 nonrefundable deposit now, with the balance due at the September guild meeting. Make your deposit check payable to the guild and send it to Kay Quella or Mary Ann Hayes.
Of course, there are a couple of wonderful quilt shops within a few minutes of the retreat center. Contact Kay Quella if you have any questions about the retreat.

Quilting Retreat 2005
Those who were unable to attend the spring retreat missed a most delightful weekend! We were fed way too well and sewed to our hearts’ content. The thirty-eight who did attend got to know one another better and shared stories, fabric, suggestions on design layout, and drooled over each another’s work. We, of course, had to make trips to the fabric shops in the area and The Quilters Cottage was most appreciative of our shopping trips to their shop. We watched the hot air balloons ascend on Saturday and Sunday, watched beautiful sunsets, and a few of us even watched the sunrise. We all survived without television, radios, kids, and husbands. We enjoyed the experience so much we decided to do it again and we have tentatively booked a retreat for September, 2006.

A Day at the Orange County Fair
by Denise Howard, Community Event Chairman
Flying Geese Quilt Guild and North Cities Quilt Guild teamed together at the Orange County Fair. The goal was to share our avocation of the art of quilting. More than twenty members from Flying Geese worked together under the direction of Denise Howard. Many guild members worked on blocks for our Philanthropy Project, which were kitted by Judi Rhoades’ philanthropy committee. Some guild members worked on their own projects. There was a lot of sharing with the public about the Wonderful World of Quilting. Peggy Sue Phillips should receive a Gold Star for spending two days at her sewing machine at the fairgrounds – she had her own sew-a-thon going. She had projects for Meals on Wheels and baby quilts – lots of beautiful items. Another big Gold Star and wholehearted thanks goes to George and Moore's Sewing Center. George provided four sewing machines for us to use during our two days at the fair. That was really great for both Moore’s Sewing Center and for us. We did not have to haul our sewing machines and the public had an opportunity to see us sewing on the Pfaff machines.
Last, but certainly not less...Mickey Berg, Joan Haws, Faith Horsky, Ada Le Claire, and Kay Quella stepped right up to the plate and helped with the showcase demonstration on Friday. They did not know they would be asked to serve the guild in this manner, yet they graciously took the stage and provided the requested demonstration. Each had lovely projects to show the public and I was very thankful that they were there. It was a job well done! Other Flying Geese Quilters Guild members who volunteered time from their schedule to help at the Orange County Fair booth include Mary Arntz, Sharon Brandt, Pat Chambers, Leslie Cushing, Sandy Harper, Sandy Ingraham, Sharon Ludwig, Sandy Montooth, Kelly Roten, Silvana Temple, and June van den Noort.
Flying Geese Quilters Guild was very well represented with entries to the County Fair. Award winners from our guild included Mickey Berg, Michele Braithwaite, Helen Cawthon, Arleen Gregg, Joan Haws, Denise Howard, Ada LeClaire, Barbara Marshburn, Carol McDaniel, and Pam Schoenbachler. This is the proof in the pudding that there is a great amount of quilting talent within the gaggle. I look forward to seeing you at the Orange County Fair in 2006! Come, join the gaggle. |
Community Education Statement
Community education is our goal. As stated in our charter, our purpose is to promote and educate our members and members of our community in the techniques and methods of creative quilting and fiber art. In order to fulfill that purpose, Flying Geese Quilters Guild has several outreach programs available to both our members and nonmembers.
Traditionally, we coordinate annual displays at Heritage Hill Park in Lake Forest and at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa. We are always willing to coordinate a quilt or quilting display when requested to do so and the committee chair feels appropriate arrangements can be made.
Activities relating to the mission of Community Education abound. Guild members are encouraged to participate in these activities whenever possible and nonmembers are invited to join us as space allows. Among these activities you will find workshops with many of our guest speakers, friendship groups to join, philanthropy workshops to make philanthropy projects and learn quilting techniques, occasional field trips, quilt auctions, quilt shows, and a retreat. For details concerning any of these activities, contact the appropriate committee chair or any board member who will direct you.
