LITTLE RED HEN

October brings us to the quilt auction. As you may have seen, there are a lot of beautiful quilts to purchase. Many of our guild members and friendship groups have donated their time and money to this fundraising event. Darla Cox and Louene Hetrick have been working diligently to make sure that the auction is a success and I am so thankful for their dedication. But the auction cannot be a success without the presence of our membership. Please remember to come with your friends and loved ones to the auction on October 20th at the Fellowship Hall of Trinity Presbyterian Church. I look forward to seeing many of our guild members there.

Also, with the quilt show coming up next year, there are lots of volunteers needed to host the event. Please see Pam Hadfield about volunteering your time and talents for the quilt show.

I must say that I am always encouraged by the efforts of all the members in making Flying Geese Quilters Guild a wonderful place of sharing, learning, and friendship.

See you at the October meeting!

Programs ~ First Vice President

The FGQG quilt auction will be on Friday, October 20, 2006. Our friendship groups and individual guild members have been madly working on quilts to donate for auction, and they have been quite successful. There are small quilts, wall quilts, large quilts, bed quilts. The door prizes Darla has collected are fantastic!

The December 11, 2006, program is once again the Little Red Hen. Take your quilting related donations to Mary Arntz ASAP. Appropriate items include UFOs, quilt blocks, quilt tops, partially quilted quilts, sandwiched quilts, yardage, books, rulers, notions – if in doubt, ask Mary.

Community Education

We have been asked to exhibit quilts at Heritage Hill Park in Lake Forest. Thirty quilts are requested for their Autumn Harvest Festival to be displayed in both buildings. A few bed quilts are need, but any size can be used – any size, any color, any pattern. When lending your quilt, make sure a label with your name is sewn on the back.

Our most recent activity was a quilt retreat, where we shared a great quilting experience. We are in the process of planning a spring retreat and a fall retreat for 2007. Much is accomplished during the retreats – piecing, quilting, and fellowship. We do not cook, but we definitely eat. We have a great time. Watch for additional information as it becomes available.

Door Prizes ~ February Meeting

Remember that gift certificates have an expiration date. Be sure to use them before they expire! Please continue to thank our vendors personally when you go into the stores for their generosity to the Flying Geese Quilt Guild each month and one more thing, please mention Flying Geese Quilt Guild when you write your thank you note.

The following are local shops that donated door prizes for our March meeting:

Sally Lansing

Fat Quarter Frenzie

In September our participants brought twenty-four fat quarters for Autumn Leaves.  The winners were Mickey Berg, Fay Kernnen, Darla Cox, Peggy Sue Phillips, and new member Linda Ruth Cox.  The block went to Sue Davis.

Stop by the Fat Quarter Frenzy table during guild meeting.  We have a block made up to demonstrate the theme of the month and samples of patterns that can be made with fat quarters.  Don’t forget, there are a number of books featuring patterns using fat quarters, so check the library’s inventory in your guild Directory.  Many of the quilting magazines print patterns calling for fat quarters.  If you are interested in Nickel Square quilts you can get a dozen five inch squares from one fat quarter.  Building a stash of fat quarters will give you a great resource for the “scrappy” quilt you may want to make or the next workshop you take.

The theme for October is Wine Harvest – grapes, fruits, berries, or any print that might be connected to wine.  How about some dandelion wine?  The colors for October are burgundy and champagne. Those fabrics that “read” solid add texture to our quilts. All the fat quarters will be combined to give a little more variety to each bundle.

You may enter up to five fat quarters each month.  Fat quarters must be 100% quilt-quality cotton measuring 18 X 22 inches.  Always enter fabric of a quality you would use in your own quilts.  The fat quarters that are given to the new member each month are donated anonymously by one of our members.

In November the theme will be It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.  Any Christmas fabric will do.  The colors are, of course, red and green.

The themes for future months include:
bullet

December: No Frenzy this month due to the Red Hen sale

bullet

January: Viewer’s Choice – share the love!
Bring any fabric, any color, but it must be something you really like.

bullet

February: Sweet Hearts – valentine and chocolate candy prints.
Colors – cherry red, chocolate brown, and white or cream

A printed list of the themes for this guild year is available at the guild meetings. Suggestions are always welcome. Stop by our table for information and inspiration.

Take a FAT CHANCE! Enter the Fat Quarter Frenzy!

Friendship Groups

There are friendship groups which will happily accept new members. If you would like to join a group, or would like to form a group, please contact me.

A new friendship group formed recently which invites members new to the guild, and old timers as well, to join them. They meet at Leah’s Fabric Gallery in Orange at 5 p.m. on the third Friday evening of each month. Their first project is a join venture to Sesame Street and the most adorable quilt you can imagine, and perhaps the Little Red Hen will have it for her auction.

Guild Auction - October
A Thread Runs Through

Thank you for your donations! I am glad that I told all my friendship group members to get their checkbooks ready, because the quilts were nice. They were all sizes, large bed size to small wallhangings. I was just so excited I cannot tell you how delighted I was.

I heard people say they were not going to the auction because they could not afford a quilt. Well, Mama Goose gave you the scoop when she said the bids are usually very low. But even if you did not buy a quilt, you had an opportunity to win a fabulous door prize. The door prizes were fantastic.

Hospitality

Goodies are never in short supply at our monthly guild meetings. Members bring all kinds of great things such as cookies, fudge, fresh fruit, pretzels, and much more. Everything is always delicious, and I thank you for sharing.

Library News

Ada Le Claire is the library Chairman for 2006.

You may have heard that I have good news and bad news. The bad news is: The library will not be open for browsing in October and November because we are meeting in Munsing Hall, the smaller fellowship hall. The good news is: I will pull any book you request in advance. There is a catalog of our books in the back of your Guild Directory, so you can use it to e-mail me with the title of the book you want and its author. I will be glad to have the book ready for you at the next meeting.

Although the library will be dark for the remainder of the year, the books will be available. There will be a drop box for returning due and overdue books.

Inventory has begun! I must account for all the library books in December. The significance is that many books will not be on site, so I cannot run to the shed and look for a book during a guild meeting. I have to pull your requests in advance and take them to the next meeting, which is no problem if you e-mail me in advance.

Little Red Hen

Do you hear her? She is scratchin’ and peckin’ and cluckin’ like you wouldn’t believe. She’s getting ready for the much more casual auction at the December guild meeting. Well, she cannot “do it” without you and Mary Arntz. Mary is the organizer, the gatherer, the one who makes your “stuff” look good to me. So, you must get that “stuff” to Mary Arntz right away. We’re already on deadline, so if you did not get to the October guild meeting and have donations for the Little Red Hen auction, call Mary today to make arrangements for a pickup or delivery.

Items normally found at the Little Red Hen are: unfinished quilts, either tops or partially quilted; quilt blocks, or a quilt in kit form; notions; fabric, either yardage or cuts. This is “clean out your sewing room” time while making someone else happy. The Little Red Hen knows that your clutter is my treasure.

Membership

Throughout the year we welcome new members to the guild.  A membership form is available from our home page and we invite you to fill it out and send it to our treasurer along the membership fee.

Please check in at the membership table when you arrive at a general membership meeting.  And please be prepared to present your membership number for us, which will expedite the process at the door.  Thanks!
